James Island, SC

James Island is a large triangular sea island that is bordered by Wappoo Creek and Charleston Harbor to the north, Morris Island and Folly Beach to the east, and the Stono River and John's Island to the west. This established island community is laced with creeks and sounds and is known throughout the region for its farming, fishing and shrimping, ancient live oaks, and more recently, its Holiday Festival of Lights held annually at James Island County Park.
The Civil War began there on the morning of April 12, 1861.

James Island has a rich history. In fact, the Civil War began there on the morning of April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces at Fort Johnson fired upon the Union-occupied Fort Sumter. Both forts were located on the island's northern shore. Much of the fighting in the Charleston area during the remaining years of the Civil War also occurred on James Island and its close neighbor, Morris Island, as Union troops tried to invade Charleston from the south from their base on Folly Beach.

After the Civil War, James Island remained predominantly rural until the 1960's. It has since become a residential suburb of the City of Charleston. Driving over tidal creeks and marshes on the James Island Connector offers spectacular views of Charleston's harbor and peninsula.

James Island, a family-oriented community, offers a wide selection of housing, from comfortable older neighborhoods to fresh, newly developed areas. Because of its convenience and accessibility to downtown Charleston, James Island has seen a surge in residential development in recent years. Many of these development are centered on the abundant and natural beauty of the island.

Not only is the island located within minutes of downtown Charleston, it is also a short drive from beautiful Folly Beach. This close proximity to Folly Beach makes James Island a popular area with people who enjoy swimming, sailing and other outdoor activities, as well as moonlit strolls along the Atlantic shore.
